Johann Christoph Volkamer (Volckamer)

Johann Christoph Volkamer (Volckamer)

(1644 - 1720), know as a Nuremberg merchant and a lover of flowers, he was the son of a botanist and gardener who studied at Padua.

In the 1660s he visited the gardens of Italy, where he took a special interest in citrus fruits. On his return, he continued to collect citrus plants
and spent several decades preparing and collecting drawings for this book.

Although he was clearly influenced by Ferrari´s Hesperides, he mentions many more species using more comprehensive illustrations.
In addition, he also broadens the book’s scope with magnificent views and planes. Finally, the book identifies the locations of aristocratic
gardens with glass-houses containing lemon, citron and pomegranate.
